Once upon a time, during the Spring and Autumn period over 2,500 years ago, there was a man named Zi Lu, the eldest disciple of Confucius.
The well-known story “Carrying Rice for a Hundred Li” that has been passed down to this day is about his filial piety toward his parents.
One day, when Zi Lu returned home, he overheard his parents talking inside:
“We’ve lived more than half of our lives. Forget about fish and meat, even just having a proper meal of white rice would be satisfying enough!”
After hearing this, Zi Lu felt deeply ashamed in his heart.
He silently made up his mind:
“I must let my parents have white rice to eat. I can’t let them suffer anymore.”
Zi Lu’s parents were both farmers, and because of years of war, their life was extremely difficult.
Zi Lu heard from others that there was a wealthy family a hundred li (50 km) away in need of laborers.
He decided to go there and give it a try.
The master of the household, seeing that Zi Lu was physically strong, decided to keep him on.
Zi Lu worked very hard and diligently, which made the master like him very much.
Half a year later, when Zi Lu was about to return home, he discovered that the silver coins the master gave him were much more than he was supposed to receive.
Zi Lu honestly told the master about it.
The master smiled and said:
“Child, the wages were not miscalculated. You work fast and diligently. This is a bonus from me.”
After thanking the master, Zi Lu happily set off for home.
On his way home, when passing through a town, he bought a sack of rice, a piece of meat, and two fish, and carried them on his back.
The weather was extremely cold, and the snow-covered roads were very slippery.
Zi Lu slipped once and almost dropped the rice sack off his back.
His hands holding the sack were freezing, so he stopped briefly to warm them before continuing his journey.
Eventually, he finally made it home.
Upon seeing his parents, he handed them the things he had bought and all the remaining wages he had earned.
The family was overjoyed.
They lit a fire and cooked together, happily enjoying a warm reunion meal.
Later, Zi Lu’s parents passed away.
He then traveled south to the State of Chu.
The King of Chu saw that he was very capable and recognized his talent, so he appointed him as an official and gave him generous treatment.
Although his material conditions improved, Zi Lu did not feel proud or overjoyed.
Instead, he would often sincerely say:
“Now that I’ve achieved a little success, my parents are no longer here. Even if I wanted to carry rice for a hundred li to show filial piety, it’s no longer possible.”
In ancient China, there was a saying:
“Among a hundred virtues, filial piety comes first.”
This means that respecting and caring for one’s parents is considered the most important of all moral values.
Zi Lu, to let his parents eat better food, was not afraid of hardship.
Such behavior is truly worth learning from.
